Dear members,

On 11 March 2017 you will have the opportunity to visit Singapore’s unique offshore Landfill on Pulau Semakau and learn more about how Singapore meets its waste disposal needs.

Semakau Landfill is located about 8km south of Singapore. A 7km perimeter rock bund was built to enclose a part of the sea off Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng to create the space required for the landfill. Semakau Landfill is filled primarily with ash produced by Singapore’s four incineration plants. Contrary to popular belief that Semakau Landfill would be another dirty and smelly landfill, thanks to the care put into the design and operational work at the landfill has ensured that the site is clean, free of smell and scenic.

Don’t miss the opportunity SAS is offering you to visit the unique landfill coexisting with vibrant marine eco-system, mangroves, grassland and shoreline habitats. During our visit we will learn more about the landfilling process at Semakau Landfill:

  1. Be aware of the problems and constraints which Singapore faces in the management of its solid waste.
  2. Learn and understand the importance of a well-managed waste disposal system in maintaining a clean city-state in the development of an efficient waste disposal system, and the measures needed to meet future challenges.
  3. Experience the entire waste management process first hand though a comprehensive guided tour.
