Dear Members and Friends,
This tour with our guide Gek (Jane Iyer, Jane’s SG Tours) is dedicated to the vanishing trades.¬†Many traditional crafts and trades have disappeared and others are very rare these days.
About the Tour:
We start with the largest bird singing and display arena in Singapore. There, we get to mingle with the scores of bird lovers and wander amidst rows and rows of birds in their cages vying for our attention with their singing. We will then go to a nearby bird cage shop and meetits 69 year old owner who still crafts cages by hand.
Later we visit one of the last giant joss maker in Singapore. This dying art of joss-making is today being carried on by three brothers, who are the 3rdgeneration owners. Getto feel the doh-like mixture made from the ground up bark of the cinnamon tree. Within the workshop, we can also find large pillar-like dragon incense sticks, figurines of Chinese deities and mythical characters, and even Asian-style nativity scenes.
Finally, we end the morning with a visit to an old school shoemaker. This more than 50-year old shop, is run by a brother and sister team, who took over the shop from their father. The shop may look rather worn and forgotten like the neighbourhood it is located in, but it lists some well-known personalities among its clientele.
