Dear Members and Friends,

Come and join us on the 1st tour of this new year with our guide Chaqa. A walk through one of Singapore’s 5 biggest and cleanest wet markets and an intimate introduction into the Peranakans.

About the Tour:
Chaqa take us through the streets to the Geylang Serai wet market. This is an authentically local market and is a go-to venue for the Malay community since everything that they get there is Halal. He tell us the history of the area and how it became the designated area for the Muslim community.
As we walk through the wet market, he explains the ingredients that can be found there and its use in the kitchen. After the wet market area, we walk up to the hawker centre and he introduce us to food that is available and which stall is the most famous amongst the locals. You get to also try the famous Haig Road Putu Piring which is a main staple for tea time for the Malays.

Then, we walk through  Joo Chiat Road. This is a historical road in Singapore where prostitution exists door to door with the Muslim community. Brothels adjacent to a mosque and yet peace is apparent throughout the street. Further down Joo Chiat Road is where the culture of the Peranakans begins to enfold alongside preferred residences of hippy expats in Singapore. Homes depictive of their colourful lifestyle adorn the side streets from this road. We walk alongside these homes as Chaqa explains how elaborate the culture is with anecdotes handed to him from members of the Peranakan family themselves.

We end our excursion at Kim Choo’s on East Coast road. Kim Choo’s is an institution for the Peranakans and we will be able to go into their shop and admire the elaborate workmanship and detailing that goes into their treasures.
