Dear Members and Friends,
SAS brings you a tour to discover one of Singapore’s cultural icons – Haw Par Villa. Please join us to discover the mysterious Haw Par Villa after dark. Learn about its history, mythology, and its darker side, with the depictions of mortality and death in different religions and cultures.
Haw Par Villa – formerly known as the Tiger Balm Garden – is an 8.5-hectare Asian cultural park, the last of its kind in the world. Built in 1937, Singapore’s largest outdoor art gallery is the brainchild of Aw Boon Haw, the millionaire philanthropist and marketing extraordinaire who gifted the world Tiger Balm. The theme park contains over 1,000 statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, folklore, legends, history, and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism.
About the tour:
“See the park in a new light – after dark, if you dare! Learn how death stalked the Aw family, and what Boon Haw did to confront his mortality. Get a sneak preview of the upcoming “Hell’s Museum”, with perspectives of the afterlife across various religions. Step into the infamous 10 Courts of Hell to see what will get you dismembered and drowned in a pool of blood. And we’ll show you how some Singaporeans communicate with the afterlife. We promise you’ll never see dying – and living – in the same way again.”
The tour is suitable for children over the age of 12Â (accompanied by an adult). Entry to the park itself is available for free before 17:45 so feel free to come before hand to walk around and see the dioramas in the daylight. The tour itself starts at 6:30 promptly.
